Herbal Highlight
Scented Geranium
Pelargonium species
Scented Geraniums make excellent house plants, where they
happily grow indoors in a sunny window during the cold months.
Most Scented Geraniums originate from the Cape of Good Hope in
Africa, and although they were introduced to Britain in 1632, they were
pretty much unknown until 1847, when they became valuable to the
French perfume industry. The Rose-scented geranium, ‘P. graveolens‘,
yields a light rose perfume with fresh green notes. The Victorians used
to bring their pots of Scented Geraniums indoors and set them on the
floor where the sun would nurture them and their skirts could rustle
them and release the scent. In the summertime, they placed the pots
along walkways to give the same aromatic effect. The plants can be
planted in the ground in the warm months, enjoying a sunny, airy spot,
in well-drained soil or potting soil.
Most of them grow within the 8” to 2 foot-high range, though to keep
them at a manageable size, the branch tips can be pinched and used, as
described below. To harvest the leaves, pick them at any time, and then
they can be dried.
There are many scented geranium ‘flavors’; rose, peppermint, orange,
lemon, lime, rose-lemon, apple, gooseberry and peppermint, to mention
a few. Many of these are for sale from Joanie’s greenhouse.
What to use them for...
Cosmetic - add the essential oil of any scented geranium to perfume,
and face cream - to normalize oily/dry skin and soothe inflamed skin.
Make a strong tea of the leaves to activate slow circulation of the
complexion. Put about a quart of the strong tea in the bath water
to ensure skin healing, increased circulation and other benefits.
Aromatic - highly-scented geranium leaves are great for potpourris
and other crafts needing a variety of scents.
Medicinal - the essential oil is used in aromatherapy as a tonic for
the nervous system, for some PMS symptoms, skin inflammation,
eczema, dry skin and herpes.
If you need Scented Geranium plants, or specific instructions on
how to use them, please e-mail or call Joanie.

Herbs“, by Leslie Bremness,

Interesting Herb Facts
* Passionflower Passiflora incarnata
The name derives from this herb’s beautiful flowers, traditionally
considered to symbolize the story of the Crucifixion, the Passion
of Christ. For beginners, part of the flower looks like a cross.
* Ginkgo biloba is earth’s oldest tree species. They can live as long
as 1,000 years. People have been using the leaves as medicine in
China for about 3,500 years.
* Cranberry Vaccinium macrocarpon prevents bladder infections by
stopping E. coli (common culprit causing these infections) from
sticking to the bladder wall.
