HERBAL HIGHLIGHT
MYRRH
Commiphora myrrha
Myrrh is a gummy resin which exudes from the bark of a shrub found in North
Africa, Arabia and Abyssinia.
It was used exclusively by the ancient Egyptians and Hebrews for incense,
cosmetics, perfume, medicine
and especially for embalming. It was considered a rare treasure and
therefore an apt gift for the Baby Jesus.
Myrrh has many modern-day uses, both medicinal and commercial.
Aromatherapeutic uses include treating wounds, mouth ulcers, dermatitis,
bacterial infections, bronchitis,
diarrhea and fungal infections. Myrrh forms a very valuable modern
ingredient in perfumes.
It is antiviral, hormone like, moderates the thyroid, an aphrodisiac and
anti-inflammatory. Myrrh is a
powerful scent used in spiritual work and to excite the upper chakras.
Information from Ruth Chambers, Valerie Ann Worwood’s
“Essential Oils and Aromatherapy” and
Jeanne Rose’s “375 Essential Oils and Hydrosols”.

The Herbal Advent Wreath
The following is an excerpt from an article that Andrea Cain, a new
subscriber to Joanie’s newsletter, gave to her.
The herbal Advent Wreath includes the following herbs, listed with their
significance:
* Artemisia ‘Silver King’: also known as wormwood, signifies bitterness of
Christ’s suffering on earth.
* Bedstraw: was used as stuffing for mattresses, signifies the ’straw’ used
in the manger bed for our Lord.
* Costmary: fragrant ‘Bible leaf’, kept in the pages of people’s Bibles to
help them stay alert during long services in days gone by.
* Evergreens: Life Eternal
* Hibiscus - This plant is also called Rose of Sharon - one of Jesus’ names
* Horehound: Bitter in taste, but brings healing
* Lavender: Essential oil for fragrance, cleansing and healing
* Lemon Balm: Fragrant leaves
* Mint: The aromatic oils are for fragrance and healing
* Pennyroyal: A traditional Christmas herb; it has a clean, fresh minty odor
and is known for its healing properties.
* Rosemary: for Remembrance, to keep in mind His sacrifice and salvation for
us.
* Rue Pods: Bitter herb, signifies bitterness of Christ’s suffering for our
sakes.
* Rose Hips: Symbolizes the crown that Jesus would wear.
* Sage: for wisdom
* Sweet Woodruff: fragrance is that of hay (the manger, Jesus’ first bed)
* Tansy: golden yellow flowers are a reminder of the gold given by the three
Kings
* Thyme: for medicinal purposes and for fragrance.
