Herbal Highlight

NETTLES
Urtica dioica

Also known as Stinging nettles, this perennial plant is useful for anemia, detoxification, rashes, arthritis, prostate enlargement, hay fever, asthma, brittle hair and edema.

Of particular interest this time of year is Nettle’s ability to fight off allergy symptoms by boosting the immune system.

The plant contains alkaloids which reduce uric acid, helping to allay gout and rheumatism symptoms.

Nettles is very nutritive and high in minerals. The leaves contain lots of iron and chlorophyll, and the roots contain high amounts of potassium.

The plant is used in the form of: capsule, tea salve and tincture.

There are no known side effects.

Generally, the root is used for the prostate, the above-ground parts for all other conditions.
Joanie will have the plants available in the spring:
Nettles is available in the HistaBlock formula (in capsules), at:

HERBAL TERMS

Sometimes we need a reminder of the terms which tell the action of herbs.
Perhaps this will be of help to you when you refer to works on herbal medicine.
This is by no means a complete list.

Adaptogen: Helps the body adapt to stress, whether it is physical, mental oremotional. Supports energy levels, and, often, adrenal gland function.
Many times it is called a “tonic”. Ginseng is a great example.
Analgesic: Pain reliever, also called anodyne. Example – White Willow.
Antioxidant: Prevents damage to cells by free radicals. Good antioxidants are Ginkgo, Hawthorne Berry, Milk Thistle, Thyme and Oregano.
Antipyretic: reduces fever. Example – Yarrow

More to come…
