Useful Herb Tincture Recipe
The
cold, wet, sometimes sloppy winters in western Pennsylvania
can
cause sinus, bronchial or lung congestion, even infections.
I make
a GREAT tincture that breaks it up and
relieves the stuffiness and pain.
Here’s
the recipe --
On a
golden, warm summer day, I gathered from my herb gardens:
Lemon
Balm leaves, Sweet Marjoram leaves and flowers,
Meadowsweet flowers, Lemon Thyme leaves, Hyssop leaves,
Chocolate Mint leaves and Boneset flowering tops.
I put
these herbs, a handful of each, into a large glass jar and then
poured
100 proof vodka in the jar, just until the herbs are covered.
Then I
added some dried Elderberries and the flowering tops of
Echinacea purpurea
plants and put the lid on tightly.
A few
months later I dug up some roots of the Echinacea, cleaned
and
chopped them, then added them to the jar of herbs being
infused, and made sure to add enough vodka to cover the herbs.
About
once a week, or whenever I thought about it,
I’d
shake the contents of the jar.
After
about 6 weeks my family and I used this tincture when one
of us
would get an occasional cold or flu. We’d use 2 or 3 droppersful
in a
cup of hot water or herb tea, to relieve the symptoms and
fight
off the viruses, often shortening the duration. A teaspoon or so
could
be mixed with honey to make a syrup.
Joanie
sells the herb plants you can grow yourself, then harvest
to
make your own tincture.
