Burdock
Arctium lappa
Burdock is native to Europe and Asia, now growing in temperate regions
throughout the world. The whole plant is dug up in autumn. Most often it is
the root that is used in natural medicine, prepared as a decoction or
tincture and taken internally. Also, it can be used externally in a compress
or poultice to speed the healing of wounds and ulcers, and help with the
symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.
Burdock is one of the foremost detoxifying herbs in Western and Chinese
herbal medicine. It treats conditions that arise due to an excess of toxins
in the body, such as throat infections, boils and chronic skin problems.
Research indicates antibiotic, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Burdock helps remove excess water from the body systems and lowers blood
sugar levels. It has anti tumor action.
It is one of the ingredients in Essiac tea. For skin problems, Burdock
combines well with Cleavers, Yellow
Dock and Red Clover.
