About Joanie Lapic, Everlasting Gardener
Joanie Lapic, from her earliest years, learned the love of gardening and
respect for the earth from her Father and Mother. Growing up, she often
“helped” Daddy with the family vegetable patch.
During the "back to the earth" movement of the '70's, Joanie became aware of
the Divinely bestowed gifts of herbs and what they can do for people. At
that time she was in college, working on a major in Environmental Studies
(including botany courses). In 1975 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree
from Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a double major in
Environmental Studies and English Literature.
She came back home to western Pennsylvania and made her first garden with
her Dad's help, growing mostly herbs. She was married in 1978 and, in the
course of raising her children, moved to the Beaver Valley in 1983, settling
in New Brighton, PA, in 1990. That is where she began her cottage
enterprise, Everlasting Gardener, in 1991. Joanie began making dried herb
and flower arrangements, selling them to local shops, and teaching
classes
about the many uses of herbs, everlasting flowers, ornamental and vegetable
garden plants.
Spring of 1993 saw the opening of the on-site Shop and small groups enjoying
Country Garden Tea Parties (high tea) in the adjoining Gardens. Since that
time, the extensive and fragrant Gardens have been the focus of many
interesting activities, including the annual Lavender Days, a time for
everyone to enjoy and explore Joanie’s favorite herb.
In recent years her focus is on herbs used therapeutically, sustaining the
health of people and pets. At present, Joanie teaches many
classes
on HERB USES and NATURAL HEALTH ~ Medical Herbs ~ Culinary Herbs ~
Aromatherapy
~ Iridology
~
Reflexology
She is often requested to speak to garden and herb clubs, church and civic
groups in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
Joanie also teaches
courses for the Act
48 Pennsylvania Dept. of Education program, helping many school teachers
from western Pennsylvania to retain their certification. Her courses help
them meet the Environmental Education Standards recently adopted in
Pennsylvania. Because of Joanie’s instruction, the youngsters in the
teacher’s classrooms are learning the value of human’s uses of herbs across
earth’s cultures and throughout history.
She does professional Garden Consulting, Designing and Maintenance, because
her first love, after all, is gardening.
At present Joanie is acquiring a degree in Master Herbalist. Over many years
she has cultivated a close relationship with these awesome herbal gifts of
the Creator. Her education is constant ~ using herbal medicines for herself
and her family, attending courses and seminars, and studying books and
periodicals. Joanie never stops learning about herbs ~ and she would be
honored to share them with you!
